Placed at the corner of Rue Sherbrooke and Avenue McGill College since 2012, this bronze statue titled “La Leçon” (“The Lesson”), created by artist Cédric Loth, is meant to be a satire on student life. The frantic student, shutting himself out from everything going on around him, is so preoccupied with his laptop that he hasn’t even bothered to remove his backpack. Nor does he notice that a squirrel is stealing his lunch, just beside him. This anxious cartoonist-style student sculpture, as opposed to the relaxed “real” sitting student beside it, studying from her notebook, caught my attention as I passed by one day in September. A moment of reflection on the virtual and the real world of young people.
